Why should fiscally responsible, hard working people pay for the mortgages of others who are living beyond their means? Our generation cannot deny the consequences of our actions, even though we may like to. To every risk there is a reward and we must be responsible for whatever that outcome may be, good or bad. This applies to every area of our lives -- financially, socially, personally, etc.
Trust and integrity is needed in our society more than ever and actions to circumvent society's consequences will only erode these values even more. Our little daughter has reinforced this truth in me. When my wife and I say something and follow through, our little girl knows the limits and stays within them. She loves us and respects us. She wants boundaries and to know what they are. However, when we don't follow through on our word, she exploits every opportunity she can and has no respect for our authority. As mortals we seek out boundaries. We want rules, laws, and contracts and we need them to be upheld by individuals and government. This is a cornerstone of society and is how trust is created -- trust in each other and trust in the system. The foundation of our society will continue to erode until the rule of law is upheld and individuals are held accountable for their actions.
(America the Beautiful - Verse 2)
America! America! God mend thine ev'ry flaw;
Confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law!
